The New Impact of Short Films

Short films are films that have a runtime less than approximately 40 to 50 minutes. Typically, these short films are viewed as student projects, short episodics, or viral videos devised to reach mass audiences in a cost-effective manner. However, this is changing. Increasingly, audiences are starting to recognize the true value and artistic intent behind short films. As the pace of life hastens, so shortens the time available to us. With less hours in the actual day allocated to leisure, cozying up or heading out to see a feature film is becoming harder to accomplish. Highly talented filmmakers have recognized the demand for short form entertainment and have answered with a boom of professional and interesting short films.

Full-length features require a hefty amount of commitment, effort, manpower, along with a significant amount of money. Short films open a way to a plethora of possibilities while requiring much fewer resources. For instance, collaborating with shorter stories with fewer characters, settings and runtime gives smaller scale filmmakers ways to hone their work and progress within their craft. Keeping the films short affords the ability to simultaneously put more focus into any given film, whilst also testing the confidence and vision of any given filmmaker by producing more films in varying genres. These short films are quite conducive to gauging the response of the public. If reactions are extremely positive, the producer can build upon the reviews and expand the plot with a greater audience, perhaps as a feature film.

When Time and Money is Short

Nowadays, the average person has insufficient time left in their schedule for movies and will slow only enough to look at something that will not need a great deal of time, say a show on TV. The unfortunate consequence of this is actually the lack of profound filmmaking that is generally found in long form feature films. Overall, this is the reason short works of creativity are so popular. Brief, straightforward, and compelling shows receive the attention of thousands, or possibly millions. Even short clips of dancing kittens will draw a crowd. As a means to regain ground, short films are being more and more embraced as a new sort of quality filmmaking within a format that may be well suited for the daily lives of the typical masses, practiced not only by students and amateurs, but by working professionals as well. It then is sensible that, within this digital age, these films be screened online to expand the viewership as far as humanly and technologically possible by way of online short film exhibition websites.

Using an example of these varieties of online short film exhibitors already mentioned, consider Deadsink's online collection of free short films. Recognizing the call for short form entertainment, Deadsink has set out to exhibit an abundant amount of quality short films and is also a superb place to find and view free short films, animations, music videos, webisodes and a lot more in several genres by filmmakers from across the world.

Filmmakers Stand to Benefit from this Increase in Short Films Viewership

An innumerable amount of films are produced per annum all over the world at an exponential rate. Since heading out to the theaters is no longer affordable, the general audience is moving over to free alternatives from the comfort of their computers. As many more short films are increasingly being released to most people without charge, the ability to find quality entertainment is growing. However, this process is often tedious and cumbersome as it generally involves sorting through poor quality short films, spam, ad riddled videos as well as sites that can be hazardous to your computer. Deadsink is a very good alternative to this manual sorting given that the assortment of short films exhibited on the website has long been compiled by rigorous screening and selection to make certain that only quality short films are present and to ensure that the amount of these short films exhibited continues to grow steadfastly. Besides, Deadsink spares its users from fees and registration and simply allows the public to come and go and watch any film on the website they want anytime they desire to view it.

Additionally, this website is affording exhibition options in a professional manner to independent filmmakers desperate for equality and marketable influence in this medium. The growing online short films markets gives independent and/or underrepresented filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their work and procure peer reviews through a free open process of submission and exhibition. Straightforward rules, guidelines, and platforms make the film submission process easy. Furthermore, the short films included in the Deadsink collection become part of the filmmaking community and gain exposure worldwide.

In every respect, short films are on the rise. As they become more prevalent, they will be able to become more and more a part of our everyday culture as a society. Who knows, maybe sooner or later short films are going to take the place of feature films and will provide us with an infinite number of stories of the many triumphs and struggles of the characters the short films tell of.

This is very interesting. I am one who does not go to the movies but I watch quite a few features on HBO and Showtime. I have not spent time checking out short films but will spend some time doing so. Thanks for the info.

Interesting. This may in fact happen, but also not before lawyers from some of the big companies maybe start suing for what they can get and salvage from the competition; we'll see.

F,

I absolutely agree. At some point the moneymakers will take their cut of the competition, but at least for now, short films are free and plentiful. Let's enjoy it while it lasts! haha

Hello, your articles brilliant. I am writing about a similar topic for my dissertation and was wondering if you used any books or where you got your research from?
